Netflix UNESCO Short Film Competition 2022 | Qualifications | Benefits | How to Apply

The Netflix in partnership with UNESCO launches a short film competition, “African Folktales, Reimagine across the sub Saharan south Africa countries.

Furthermore, the aim of this competition is to discover new voices and to give emerging filmmakers in Sub-Saharan Africa visibility on a global scale.

Apart from this, UNESCO and Netflix believe strongly in the importance of promoting diverse local stories, and bringing them to the world.

Also, they recognize that many emerging filmmakers struggle with finding the right resources and visibility to enable them to fully unleash their talents and develop their creative careers.

Therefore, eligible filmmakers across Sub-Saharan Africa should apply on the theme of “African Folktales, Reimagined”.

Netflix UNESCO Short Film Competition 2022 for Filmmakers in sub-Saharan African


  • Firstly, only for filmmakers from the Sub-Saharan Africa region.
  • Secondly, applicant should be between 18 to 35 years old;
  • Thirdly, must have a minimum and maximum of 2 years and 5 years of demonstrable professional experience in the audio-visual industry.
  • Finally, already developed and produced 1- to 2 theatrical feature films, television fiction, documentaries, or 2-3 short films and/or commercials seeking to venture into feature film development and production.


  • Final 6 storytellers will win $25,000 each
  • Each of them will also receive a production budget of up to $75,000 to create their short film.
